However, when connected to EOSCount I get a shutter count of almost 400,000. I know the shutter is rated for 300,000 so this would indicate that the shutter is likely to fail sooner rather than later.

It could fail quickly, or never. One important note on shutter life: high and/or humid storage temperatures and other conditions and events may affect the life. Lubricants may be fine for 150K clicks in a year, but not spread over five years. Many things affect the life, beyond just the mechanical design. KP.

I’d bet it’s from hobbyists who think they need the best gear possible to take pics of their kids. A professionally used 1D mkiii should have 10x that shutter count. Yeah, that’s a good point. All the better for me, I guess. Probably people who can afford a 1d but actuality just needed a Rebel.
